4 Basic Car Skills Every Car Owner Should Know
Posted on July 28, 2022
You don't have to be a car maintenance expert, but if you own a car, there are a few basic car skills that you should be able to handle on your own. Nexcar Auto Sales & Leasing recommends knowing how to check your tire pressure, clean your wiper blades, replace an air filter, and know-how to check your oil. To see why these four areas are important, continue reading this guide put together by our Car Dealership in Toronto.
Check Your Tire Pressure
Oftentimes this task is neglected by car owners but it is one that should be checked on regularly. Checking your tire pressure should be done on a regular basis and it can be done by purchasing a tire gauge. Don't forget that checking your spare tire is essential also. If you want to find the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch) for each tire, you can check the owner's manual.
Replace Your Wiper Blades
If your windshield wipers are no longer leaving you with a clean and clear view of what's ahead, it's important to take the time to clean them. Cleaning your wipers include pouring some windshield washer fluid on a rag and wiping them down. If this does not work, it may be time to purchase a new set of wipers. As a tip, you should avoid purchasing cheaper alternatives as they will lack in quality.
Change Your Air Filter
Replacing your air filter is critical because if you don't, you risk decreasing your car's fuels efficiency and reducing your engine's useful life. This job is actually quite simple, all you have to do is open the hood up, take out the air filter and remove the cover, then replace it with a new filter and put the cover back on. Letting your air filter get too dirty before you replace it is not good for your vehicle.
Check Your Oil Level
Getting an oil service can be the right thing to do if you're not sure how to perform an oil change, but you can still check your oil level in the meantime. To do this, pull out the dipstick and wipe it off, then push the dipstick back in and check both ends to see where the oil is. It's important to stay above the minimum oil mark and remain below the maximum mark. The colour of the oil should range from dark brown to black, if it is any other colour you should see a professional.
