Why Is Smoke Coming Out of My Vehicle?

Colour & Smell Indicators
If you find that your car is smoking, it's important to take notice of which colour it is and what kind of smell or odour is coming out. These pieces of knowledge will be key indicators as to why your car is experiencing an issue. Below we have outlined six different colours/odours and their meanings.
1. Black Smoke & Gasoline Odour
If you have black smoke and a gasoline odour coming from your exhaust you must take action immediately. This means that your vehicle is burning raw fuel and this could lead to damages to your catalytic converter and your O2 sensor.
2. Black Smoke & Burning Plastic Smell
This type of smoke and smell is commonly found under the hood as in modern-day vehicles, there are many wires found under there. This is usually caused by burned wires or electrical failure.
3. Heavy White Smoke
If your exhaust pipe has white smoke coming out, this could signal to you that you have a failed internal engine part that could be burning, or it could indicate that you have a head gasket issue.
4. Light White Smoke & Strong Odour
If you see light and thin white smoke with a strong odour, this could be a sign that your radiator hose has snapped and is spraying coolant all over the hot engine.
5. Thick Gray Smoke
If you see thick gray smoking coming out of your tailpipe, this is your signal that you have transmission fluid inside the intake manifold.
6. Blue/Gray Smoke & Strong Bitter Odour
When this kind of smoke and smell is coming out of your tailpipe, it could be signalling to you that your engine is burning oil.
